BIM Excellence: Finalists

The adoption of BIM continues to grow across the industry – and these organisations have demonstrated an exemplar approach.

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Bam 30 Broadwick

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Bam 30 Broadwick

Bam Construction

Bam became (jointly) the first contractor to achieve the BSI Kitemark certification for BIM Level 2, and has rolled out training to senior management, with tailored programmes for individual specialisms including the design, construction and commercial teams.

A standout project last year was the firm’s work on 30 Broadwick Street for Great Portland Estates, where Bam developed an asset information model during construction which has been kept alive by Bam’s FM team after the building opened.

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Graham

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Graham

Graham Construction

In 2016 Graham became the first tier one contractor in either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland to achieve BIM Level 2 certification from BSi.

The firm trained 40 per cent of its team through the Graham BIM Academy last year, using suitable live projects as BIM ‘enabler’ training schemes. It also stepped up internal and external communication around BIM to keep raising awareness, as well as investing in its BIM Labs R&D programme.

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Lendlease

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Lendlease

Lendlease

Lendlease continued to invest in BIM in 2016, using the technology on a number of high-profile complex developments including the International Quarter, Rathbone Square and Elephant Park, all in London.

At the International Quarter, the contractor used BIM for supply chain procurement, engaging 27 different supply chain partners (around 85 per cent of trade packages). The firm used more than 500 BIM models, with direct input from its supply chain – showing Lendlease’s commitment to engage with and upskill its suppliers.

Mott MacDonald Bentley

Mott MacDonald Bentley’s work for United Utilties, part of its five-year programme of works under AMP6, helped the client towards its vision of achieving BIM Level 2.

MMB took a lead role in United Utilities’ BIM steering group, carrying over expertise gleaned from other water framework contracts.

Together with other construction delivery partners and the client’s engineering service provider Jacobs, MMB and United Utilities developed a truly collaborative approach for working across high-value multi-disciplinary projects, with BIM Level 3 now on the horizon.

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence NG Bailey

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence NG Bailey

NG Bailey

NG Bailey is an active participant in the CIBSE BIM Steering Group, helping to set BIM standards for its specialist sector, and developed and launched a new open-access product called BIMHawk, designed to more easily manage and integrate CIBSE product data templates in Revit.

Other high-profile BIM projects completed in 2016 included the Soapworks at Salford Quays, Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire for Vinci, and HMPO Durham for Carillion. In particular, the Soapworks project was recognised by the Ministry of Justice as an exemplar BIM project and will act as a benchmark for future schemes.

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Skanska Construction UK

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence Skanska Construction UK

Skanska Construction UK

Skanska has invested heavily in BIM, achieving BSI Kitemark Level 2 certification.

The contractor is also adopting augmented reality, using Microsoft HoloLens to visualise projects, and it was the among the first to deploy the Daqri smart helmet on its Scalpel tower project on Lime Street in London.

Skanska uses digital planning tools on every new project and continues to provide support and guidance to the supply chain on BIM, too.

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence The Northern Hub Alliance

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence The Northern Hub Alliance

The Northern Hub Alliance

The Northern Hub Alliance is building the Ordsall Chord, which will provide a direct link between Manchester’s three main line stations for the first time.

The entire project has been modelled in BIM, with the technology providing a platform to support the collaborative aims of the alliance.

The project’s shared information model simplified an unusually complex rail infrastructure scheme, allowed early release of information for construction and helped promote a shared responsibility for getting things right.

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence West Midlands Combined Authority

CN Awards 2017 BIM Excellence West Midlands Combined Authority

West Midlands Combined Authority / LEPs

The Black Country, Greater Birmingham & Solihull and Coventry & Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnerships, working as part of the West Midlands Combined Authority, have driven an initiative called BIMwm – a cross-region framework to deliver a simplified BIM solution for the whole construction supply chain.

It provides a comprehensive range of services, from 3D modelling and design through to BIM object creation and cloud-based hosting. This encourages engagement with SMEs and offers BIM awareness workshops to increase knowledge.
