Winner: University of Nottingham
This year, for the first time, we took the Client of the Year category out of the hands of our judges.
We asked all the companies who were shortlisted for a Construction News Award this year to nominate their top three clients in the calendar year. The result was that five outstanding clients were picked from the list of dozens entered by our shortlisted companies.
We then took these five clients and put the vote out to Construction News readers and the wider public to determine a winner. The result was that the University of Nottingham topped the poll and was named Client of the Year.
Its principal achievement this year was an incredible tale of triumph over adversity. Morgan Sindall was 12 months into an 84-week programme to build the university’s GlaxoSmithKline Centre for Sustainable Chemistry centre when a fire destroyed the timber-framed lab in September 2014.
Despite the devastation caused by the incident, the client fought back and worked with Morgan Sindall to create the world’s first naturally ventilated laboratory, securing both BREEAM Outstanding and LEED Platinum ratings.
Judges were impressed with the client’s ambition for sustainable building, despite the setbacks it had on the job, leading to the project being named this year’s Construction News Awards Sustainable Project of the Year.
Working hand-in-hand with its contractor to create an iconic new building in the face of adversity, while setting new standards for sustainable construction worldwide, makes the University of Nottingham the 2017 Client of the Year.
