Morrisroe’s safety excellence in 2016 was demonstrated by its work on Greenwich Peninsula, winning the client’s safety award for all four quarters despite it being open to all Peninsula projects.

The firm has embraced HAVwear technology and implemented dust elimination techniques, and has developed a bespoke supervisor training course dubbed ‘Black Hat Engagement’. The BHE programme has led to improved safety performance that surpasses industry best practice in many cases, with teams encouraged to innovate to overcome any issues.

Aggregate Industries’ health and safety approach makes it the responsibility of all employees to look after their safety and that of their colleagues. This was demonstrated best by an incident at Torr Quarry in September 2016, when a maintenance employee failed to isolate a mill before entering – a serious mistake, but one which he informed his supervisors of immediately, despite knowing it would lead to disciplinary action. 

In 2016, the firm hit the milestone of 300 employees undertaking mental health first aid training, and carries out regular medical screenings for employees, which have helped diagnose serious non-work-related illnesses.

In 2014 one of Clancy Docwra’s employees suffered a fatal injury at work.

In response, the Clancy Group reassessed how it controlled the use of dangerous tools and equipment hired out by Clancy Plant and developed its ‘i-am’ technology, which ensures every team member has a personalised card that holds a secure record of their current training and certifications.

Specialist equipment can only be activated when the card of an authorised user is inserted into on-board readers – and it must remain there or the machine stops immediately. This, coupled with new safety training, has seen a 65 per cent reduction in LTIs between April 2014 and March 2016 across the Clancy Group.

Interserve Construction’s West Midlands region achieved an AIR of zero in 2016, with the rate having fallen every year but one from 2011 to 2016.

The regional business introduced a Health and Safety Forum in December 2015 to provide time to focus on improving standards, resulting in a number of effective initiatives.

These are now being adopted across the Interserve Construction business, helping to improve the group’s performance as a whole.

Lanes Utilities carries out wastewater maintenance, repair and rehabilitation for Thames Water, with its turnover almost doubling in two years and its headcount increasing by more than 350.

The company has invested more than £60,000 in a 360-degree video training theatre and launched a wellbeing programme with stress and resilience training.

In particular, wellbeing and happiness is monitored daily through the company’s own Feeling app, which asks employees how they are feeling every day and if they would like to talk, resulting in a drop in the number of unhappy workers and a reduction in employee turnover.

Lendlease ran a number of health and safety initiatives in 2016. These included crane intruder detection to protect projects, training more than 850 staff as mental health first aiders to spot the early signs of problems among employees, and WhatsApp groups set up for site supervisors to communicate and discuss observations.

The contractor’s Glasshouse Gardens project in Stratford, London, achieved one million hours incident and injury-free, while a number of initiatives on its Elephant Park project helped reduce the number of critical incidents across the park by 50 per cent.

In 2016 Wates achieved a 49 per cent AFR reduction, a 25 per cent reduction in RIDDOR injuries, 29 per cent fewer MoP injuries and a 73 per cent reduction in RIDDOR dangerous occurrences – significantly ahead of group targets aimed at reducing the firm’s LTIR to 0.10 by 2020.

This was achieved amid the acquisition of parts of Shepherd Group in late 2015 and a 60 per cent increase in workforce. The company also launched its We’re Safer Together campaign last year targeting increased employee communication and featuring a comprehensive training campaign.

In 2016, Willmott Dixon reduced its accident frequency rate by 50 per cent, and of the 50 projects it completed last year 89 per cent were finished with an AFR of zero.

A major contributor to this success was the firm’s pre-enrolment process for site newcomers, which provides all relevant health and safety information online before they arrive on site and uses Q&As to ensure information has been understood.

This allows shorter inductions on site-specific health and safety issues, with Willmott Dixon estimating it gained an extra 90,000 working hours as a result, as well as the aforementioned reduction in accidents.
