These finalists have clocked up remarkable health, safety and wellbeing stats despite projects as challenging as sewage works, substations, motorways and tube lines.

AMK – Deephams STW

A joint venture of Aecom, Murphy and Kier has delivered critical upgrades to one of London’s biggest sewage works as part of a £250m project. The contractors used exhaustive planning and 3D design modelling to meet challenging regulatory agreements, as have hit every programme milestone set by Thames Water.

AMK’s team went more than two million worker-hours without a reportable incident, despite the challenging site environment. The companies have also gone to great lengths to identify potential hazards, collaborate to reduce risk, and then share lessons throughout the supply chain and other stakeholders.

Costain Skanska JV – Crossrail C360 Shafts and Headhouses

Costain and Skanska have been working on Crossrail’s ventilation and access shafts at Eleanor Street and Mile End Park since 2012. The joint venture’s Be Safe Injury Free behavioural safety programme combined an externally accredited Costain initiative and Skanska’s Injury Free Environment strategy. This aimed to encourage its workforce to consider the impact of their behaviour on colleagues while empowering them to identify hazards and flag necessary changes.

In 2017 the project went 1.2m worker-hours without a single RIDDOR, with more than 1,000 workers taken through safety orientation session and 16 workforce surveys carried out to garner feedback and take action where required.

Costain Skanska JV – Crossrail C412 Bond Street Station

The second Costain / Skanska entry on the list, the £320m Bond Street upgrade comprised two 35 m-deep ticket halls five storeys below ground as well as 500 m of platform.

The JV has demonstrated a focus on wellbeing, training up 18 mental health first aiders and putting 73 per cent of the team through mental health awareness courses.

Over the past 12 months the Costain / Skanska team has gone 1.3m worker-hours with zero RIDDORs and zero lost-time incidents, with a total of 12,392 hours of health, safety and wellbeing training conducted.

Interserve Construction – Piazza Learning Centre

Interserve’s project for the University of York posed the challenge of constructing a major new building on a live campus among 20,000 staff and students, as well as other construction projects.

The contractor put in place several initiatives to ensure high standards, including a board game-style video induction and QR codes that linked to critical procedures and information. Health screening was also mandated for all Interserve employees, with a mobile service provided for the entire workforce.

The success of these measures has led many of them to subsequently be rolled out across the wider Interserve group.

J Murphy and Sons – Nemo Link

Siemens’ Nemo project involves the development of a 130 km HVDC electricity interconnector between Belgium and England, which will operate at a 1,000 MW capacity. Murphy scooped the job to build a £24m converter station at the English end of the cable in Kent.

The company implemented a cultural development programme to further improve behaviours and standards, and conducted full-day culture and engagement inductions for staff. As a result, it clocked up more than 320,000 worker-hours without a lost-time incident.

Murphy has also offered a free confidential counselling service, having recognised the business benefits of creating a supportive environment for workers.

Kier – R7

Part of the mammoth King’s Cross regeneration site, Kier has delivered 14,400 sq m of office space within the £70m R7 building.

A focus on prefabrication cut time on site for operatives by 40 per cent and significantly reduced the amount of work conducted at height.

With so many contractors working across the wider King’s Cross site, Kier hosted a safety open day alongside supply chain partners, which set up stalls to display the latest measures and innovations.

Its various efforts saw Kier complete the project with zero RIDDORs having clocked up 670,000 worker-hours.

Mac-Group – One Cathedral Square, Bristol

This office refurbishment posed significant health, safety and wellbeing challenges for contractor Mac-Group, including the close proximity of residential properties as well as complex site and traffic restrictions.

The company’s construction vehicles had to operate close to College Green, a busy pedestrianised public park, requiring extensive planning and co-ordination to protect passers-by.

Mac-Group deployed three full-time traffic marshals and a marshal supervisor, alongside a dedicated logistics manager to co-ordinate all deliveries and constantly monitor the site – all while remaining within the client’s budget. 

The £7.5m project was nevertheless completed without incident having recorded 104,000 worker-hours.

Toppesfield – Mind Yourself Cultural Behavioural Safety Programme

Surfacing subcontractor Toppesfield rolled out its Mind Yourself behavioural programme on its contract for the A5/M1 link road. The initiative employs immersive training to highlight how workers’ behaviours can affect not only themselves but their colleagues and families.

It also aims to empower staff to challenge colleagues when they see unsafe behaviours, with training and culture clearly driven by the active involvement of senior management. As a result, the company reported a 136 per cent increase in near-miss reporting in 2017 as well as zero RIDDORs, despite a 46 per cent year-on-year increase in hours worked.
