A first-time category for the CN Awards, these projects have all achieved their own brand of innovation and excellence around the world.
CN Awards 2017 International Project Bouygues Travaux Publics Arncliffe Tunnel
Bouygues Travaux Publics: North Strathfield Rail Underpass Alliance, Australia
The North Strathfield Rail Underpass Alliance saw Bouygues Travaux Publics involved with constructing a rail underpass, upgrading a station and delivering new tracks on brownfield land. This included excavating a 150 m-long underpass beneath three live tracks, rebuilding an operational station, and laying 2.4 km of new track alongside active lines.
Delivering under budget and ahead of schedule saw the Alliance win additional works in another Sydney suburb. This comprised a new underpass beneath four live tracks and another heritage listed station upgrade, also delivered under budget and ahead of schedule.
CN Awards 2017 International Project IN2 Engineering Design Partnership
IN2 Engineering Design Partnership: EPIC Ireland
EPIC Ireland is the first digital-only museum in the world, delivered across 21 interactive galleries and situated in vaults beneath the cast iron-framed Grade I-listed Custom House Quarter building.
An unobtrusive design solution saw existing ducts used as service pathways, providing fresh air, high-level electrical/audio-visual and fire protection as well as a sprinkler system. Meanwhile, a floating truss arrangement allowed fixing of services as they couldn’t be attached directly to the walls.
CN Awards 2017 International Project M W Group IMEC Fab 3
M+W Group: IMEC 450 Fab3, Belgium
The IMEC 450 Fab3 project in Leuven, Belgium, is designed to enable cutting-edge nanotechnology research and development.
At the heart of the project is a 4,000 sq m state of-the-art cleanroom, which rests on a precision cast 900 mm-thick concrete ‘waffle table’ base. This is entirely separate from the outer walls, providing unrivalled resistance to seismic activity. Its structure makes it virtually vibration free since the extreme nature of the facility’s precision requires accuracies of a millionth of a millimetre.
CN Awards 2017 International Project Pell Frischmann India
Pell Frischmann: Nagpur-Betul Highway 69, India
Stretching across two Indian states, this £300m four-laning and upgrade of a section of National Highway 69 saw works take place over 174 km.
As independent engineer to the National Highways Authority of India Pell Frischmann provided construction supervision, with services including design review, completion testing and certification, and dispute resolution.
Completion six months ahead of schedule was a remarkable achievement in a country facing major challenges with congestion and road safety.
CN Awards 2017 International Project The Deluxe Group
The Deluxe Group: Motiongate, Dubai Parks & Resorts
The Deluxe Group helped bring life to five attractions based on Sony Pictures Studios movies in Motiongate Dubai, creating sets, props and special effects for attractions based around Hollywood movies.
Deluxe pre-manufactured each show’s set in full using innovative construction methods at its Portadown workshop, before dismantling them for shipping to site for final assembly in a narrow installation window.
The firm won the contract despite low-price bids from the east and other high-quality bids from internationally renowned specialists.
CN Awards 2017 International Project WYG Melamchi Ghyang healthpost rebuilt
WYG: WYG supports Community Action Nepal
Following the Nepal earthquakes that devastated entire communities in 2015, WYG pledged to support Community Action Nepal with reconstruction in rural Himalayan locations.
WYG committed to deploying construction and engineering expertise to Nepal to carry out damage assessment and develop a realistic and achievable rebuild programme. All the work delivered has been pro-bono, at no cost to the CAN charity.
This has seen WYG provide quality assurance and project management for all the rebuild projects including three schools, three porter shelters and 12 health posts.
