Balfour Beatty Power Transmission & Distribution

Balfour Beatty PT&D’s overhead line business brought in a workforce of 300-plus people for training in two-week blocks, staggered over a four-month period during the winter months. These workers took a specific overhead line rigging module written and developed by the company, tackling a particularly high-risk area of activity.

The company’s training team holds a number of external accreditations and has worked with industry bodies to develop new training courses – as well as collaborating on the new Trailblazer apprenticeships for the power industry.

Bouygues UK

Bouygues UK has invested heavily in training, not just for directly employed staff but also for its supply chain and subcontractors. Its National Skills Academy for Construction delivers accredited training programmes, and the firm has created its own management and leadership masterclass.

Bouygues also established B-Y-Gen, a forum to allow ‘Generation Y’ employees to have a link with all levels of management, while its relationship with Wolverhampton University saw it sponsor 20 trainees in the academic year 2016/17.

Clark Contracts

In 2016, Clark Contracts worked in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University to develop a new Masters course, which it believes is the first of its kind in the UK, studying university modules alongside a series of bespoke Clark Contracts service modules that were developed in-house. A total of 15 employees began on the course earlier this year.

The firm was awarded the President’s Award by RoSPA, marking 10 consecutive years of RoSPA Gold Awards, and delivered 2.8 days of training per employee – above the industry average.

Heron Bros

Heron Bros has shown commitment to ongoing training and development for all its employees, and 2016 was a particularly special year.

In October, the company broke CIOB records with seven employees obtaining professional accreditation and chartership within one affiliation ceremony, the largest group to be certified at once in Ireland.

And in December, Heron Bros became the first organisation from any sector in Northern Ireland, and the first construction company in the UK, to achieve the Investors in People Platinum accreditation.

Highway Traffic Management

Highway Traffic Management began working with youth homelessness charity St Basil’s in 2016, devising what would become known as the Homeless to Highways scheme.

From initial conversations in September, the firm targeted having people on site by December, and after a two-stage interview process it was able to offer three candidates contracts, with operatives working in November, ahead of schedule.

The scheme has been so successful that it’s been adopted in both directions – by Amey, one of its clients, and A1 Jobs, its agency provider.

Howells Patent Glazing

Family-owned SME Howells Patent Glazing has recognised the value of training, joining forces with local trainers from several companies including Dudley College to roll out programmes to more than 75 per cent of its staff.

In particular, three staff are undertaking (at the time of entry) an NVQ Level 3 course in leadership and management.

As an SME, taking time out to devote time to training is a big commitment – but the results for Howells prove that it can be well worth the effort.

CN Awards 2017 Training ISG

CN Awards 2017 Training ISG

ISG’s National Skills Academy for Construction has enabled it to deliver more than 1,575 training ‘outputs’ for young people and the supply chain in the last three years, with 639 of those achieved in 2016. This was carried out over nine different projects last year, across the country.

The contractor also developed sector-based work academies to provide pre-employment training for unemployed people, with 67 students gaining a L1 Construction, Maths & English qualification and a CSCS card.

CN Awards 2017 Training Skanska UK

CN Awards 2017 Training Skanska UK

Skanska UK

Skanska developed a suite of new leadership development programmes to help leaders be more inclusive and tackle some of the unconscious biases they might hold.

The nine-month Leading with Purpose programme has seen the contractor partner with two providers to develop leadership skills and promote a more diverse and sustainable workforce, while a new inclusive recruitment course has helped to change the perceptions of hiring managers.

Skanska believes these programmes, coupled with others, can benefit its business as well as the industry more widely – helping to tackle the sector-wide skills shortage.
