Winner: Tideway, in partnership with ATT

Tideway saw off competition from some of the biggest names in the industry to win this award thanks to an initiative described by the judges as a “game-changer”.

One of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects, the £4.2bn Thames Tideway Tunnel is a 25 km sewer that employs 4,000 workers directly and around 5,000 more through its supply chain. The scheme encompasses 24 different construction sites over a huge area, with 11 of these located on river banks.

Give the scale and location of the project, Tideway set out to achieve a step-change in health and safety on major infrastructure.

This led the client to launch its Employer Project Induction Centre (Epic), aimed at ensuring consistent and highly effective safety inductions across the project. A specific objective of Epic was to avoid the spike in incidents often seen during the mobilisation stage of major projects.

Epic provides operatives with an immersive, multi-media experience as inductees witness a fatal incident on a site, from its causes through to its consequences. Attendance is mandatory for every person who works on the project, from the chief executive down.

Tideway invested significantly in the centre, including a full permanent set featuring digital special effects, with total costs for the initiative running at approximately £110,000 a month.

The company brought in six actors, an event manager, three facilitators, two ushers and one administrative assistant; currently as many as 39 people are working four days a week on the centre.

Judges’ comment

Workshops ensure that workers understand the importance of challenging unsafe behaviour or conditions, and that they think for themselves about the safest and healthiest way to undertake their activities – regardless of their roles.

As teams move onto the next stages of the project, Tideway intends to update the initiative with new approaches that are suited to the work being carried out.

The company has also recently launched its latest version of the initiative – Epic logistics – aimed at HGV drivers, with its facility becoming an approved driver training centre.

Since being rolled out, the Epic induction has been completed by more than 10,000 workers. Feedback has shown that 95 per cent of participants have said they would be more confident in challenging poor health and safety as a result of the induction.

Analysis also suggests that Tideway has achieved its aim of avoiding the typical spike in incidents during mobilisation compared with recent major projects, such as Crossrail and the Olympics.

The judges were hugely impressed with Tideway’s investment and innovation, hailing Epic as “a fantastic approach that will change the industry”.
