Five firms in Olympic Stadium conversion race

Sir Robert McAlpine and Balfour Beatty are among five construction firms tendering for the £100 million Olympic Stadium conversion project.

Also in the running for the project are ISG, Buckingham Group and Shepherd Construction, a spokeswoman for London Legacy Development Corporation revealed today.

The winner of the main shell-and-core project will be revealed this summer and work will begin in October.

The news comes just days after West Ham United were confirmed as tenants for the iconic stadium, which will have a capacity of 54,000 once it is converted in time for the 2016-17 football season.

Work will include doubling the size of the roof and installing retractable seating, to allow fans to sit over the running track during games.

Sir Robert McAlpine led the consortium that built the Olympic Stadium.
