Government figures show further construction order falls

Construction orders for February totalled £2.1 billion, down by £100 million from January according to figures from the Office for National Statistics.

Infrastructure orders dropped from £617 million in January to £425 million in February, but public housing work increased to £512 million from £393 million.

Orders in the three months to February 2009 fell by 9 per cent compared with the previous three month period and fell by 34 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.

Meanwhile orders in the 12 months to February 2009 fell 24 per cent compared with the previous 12 months.

Private housing orders fell by 51 per cent in the three months to February 2009 compared with the same period a year earlier.
