Green Games

As chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, I wholly approve of the open competition of more than 75,000 Games-related business opportunities worth an estimated £6 billion.

Our expectation is that the companies that will be seeking this business will ensure that sustainability requirements are embedded in every tier of the supply chain. We also expect the London Development Agency to provide comprehensive support to small businesses and people in East London who want to learn new skills to support the Games.

The Commission & National Audit Office are working together to review procurement with particular reference to value for money and sustainability.

The role of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 is to provide assurance to the Olympic Board and to act as a ‘critical friend’ to review progress of the London 2012 key stakeholders as they undertake the challenge of delivering the most sustainable Olympics ever staged.

We firmly believe that London 2012 is an unprecedented opportunity to realise and showcase the economic, environmental and social benefits to be gained from placing sustainability at the heart of large infrastructure projects and to encourage behavioural change.

This will not only benefit the planet and society, but the experience gained will give the UK a transformational competitive advantage in many sectors.
