. . . fatalities at record low

THE HEALTH and Safety Executive is expected to announce a record low for the industry's death toll today (Thursday).

Earlier this year HSE chief inspector of construction Stephen Williams said: 'We are cautiously optimistic that there will be a significant reduction in the number of fatalities for 2005-06. The lowest number to date, 65, was reached in 1998-99 and we are optimistic that this year's total will be below that figure.'

In 2004-05, 71 workers died.
