02Aug91 KUWAIT: US ARCHITECT HELLMUTH OBATA AND KASSABAUM WINS DESIGN CONTRACT FOR NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING.

New York architect Hellmuth Obata and Kassabaum has been appointed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers to design a new interior for the fire-damaged National Assembly building in Kuwait.Main contractor will be Kharafi, a Kuwaiti firm.The three-month assignment worth US$2.5 million (£1.5 million) was awarded on behalf of the Kuwaiti government and calls for an entirely new design.This includes an exterior landscaping package, a walkway for the north and south sections of the first floor and closed circuit television.Bovis International which built the original complex was asked to submit a comprehensive repair and renewal proposal.
