Wimpey has won a DM48.5 million (£18.6 million) contract to build two office blocks with 34,000 sq m of space in north-east Berlin. The contract is Wimpey's second big deal in Germany since it set up Wimpey GmbH in Hamburg 18 months ago and its first in the former east Germany. The office blocks on the Weissensee business park will have four storeys above ground and two basement storeys. The steel-framed buildings will have reinforced glass and brick cladding. The developer is Concordia Bau and Boden and completion is scheduled for late in 1995.The firm has taken a different route from some other UK contractors to building up its German and east European business by beefing up its small existing German operation rather than targeting local firms. Its first success was a DM42 million (£16.5 million) contract last November in a joint venture with Dutch partners Bobema and Moonen Luckers to redevelop a shopping centre at Essen.
