The World Bank approved a $460 million (£300 million) loan to finance a 154 m high rockfill dam at Xiaolangdi in China, centrepiece of a $2.3 billion (£1.5 billion) plan to control flooding on the lower reaches of the Yellow River. The dam will generate 5400 gigawatts an hour and protect 103 million people from floods which have claimed a million lives over the past 50 years. CONSTRUCTION NEWS
