09Nov90 UK: SIR FREDERICK SNOW, BRITISH RAIL AND FITCH BENOY WIN THE MAIN 1990 STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN AWARDS.

The FFV Aerotech Hangar at Stansted airport, the Brinnington Railway bridge at Manchester and The Pavilions scheme at Uxbridge town centre are this year's major award winners in the Structural Steel Design Awards. The winners will be announced today (Thursday) at a presentation lunch at the Savoy Hotel in London. The awards - which are sponsored by British Steel and the British Constructional Steelwork Association are made annually to recognise high standards of structural and architectural design in the use of steel.They also, say the sponsors, recognise the potential of steel in terms of efficiency, cost effectiveness, aesthetics and innovation.As well as the major awards, commendations went to the Clayton Square shopping centre, Liverpool (for Wimpey Property Holdings); Cross Keys swing bridge, Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire (for the Department of Transport East Midlands Regional Office); The David Mellor Factory, Hathersage, Derbyshire (for David Mellor Design) and Plantasia, Oasis Park, Swansea, (for Swansea City Council in association with Citygrove Developments).The awards are to be presented by His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester, and the sponsors will be represented by BCSA president Sandy Bone and British Steel General Steels chairman Dr David Grieves.STANSTED AIRPORTThe 8,700 sq m maintenance hangar at Stansted Airport was designed for FFV Aerotech by Sir Frederick Snow and Partners, with specialist structural steelwork design by Burks Green and Partners. A clear span of 98 m by 170 m provided by a Cubic space frame roof enables two Boeing 747 jumbo jets to be housed.Sir Frederick Snow designed the hangar to be diamond shaped because of the narrow shape of aeroplanes, and it is the largest independently operated clear span hangar in Europe. The roof structure is based on the principle of a double spanning Vierendeel frame, with a total of more than 1,200 separate modules used in its construction.Although these roof members are each 4 m high, the depth of the roof has been reduced because the space frame system allows all services to be located within the frame itself. An overall clear height of 23 m is provided within the hangar.Main contractor for the project was Costain Construction with steelwork by Hunt Steel and Cladding. The architect was Faulks Perry Culley and Rech.BRINNINGTON RAILWAY BRIDGEWith a single span of 12 m, the Brinnington Railway Bridge on the Manchester to Hayfield railway is believed to be the largest single span warren truss girder bridge in Europe. It was fabricated by NEI Thompson Horseley Bridge Division and erected on site over a four month period in 1988.It was then slid into position by main contractor Fairclough Civil Engineering.Client for the £5.8 million bridge, part of the Manchester Outer Ring Road M63/M66 Portwood to Denton project, was the Department of Transport. Design was by British Rail's Regional Civil Engineer, London Midland Region.THE PAVILIONSPrudential Assurance's £7.2 million scheme at The Pavilions in Uxbridge entailed covering the exposed sections of the shopping centre with a new roof while working alongside shoppers. Structural engineer was the Michael Barclay Partnership and the architect was Fitch Benoy. Main contractor was Henry Boot Southern, steelwork contractor was Blight and White.The centre has a pitched roof but is dominated by a steel framed Venetian tower which holds the lift shaft and is served by three bridges which connect to the existing multistorey car park.CLAYTON SQUAREClayton Square is a steel-framed building clad in brick and reconstituted stone in the heart of Liverpool's city centre. It was designed by consulting engineer Sir M MacDonald and built by Wimpey at a cost of £27 million.Steelwork design was by Grove Consultants.CROSS KEYSThe 1830 bridge, designed by Thomas Telford and Sir John Rennie, has been refurbished for the Department of Transport East Midlands Office by Tilbury Construction at a cost of £2.8 million. Consulting engineer was Husband and Co.
