The City loves Midlands house builder Wilson Bowden because Wilson Bowden is prudent and conservative and realistic. It has managed its land banks in a quietly competent way and maintained its margins. These virtues take on extra meaning if predictions of further falls in land values and house prices come true. The ripple running through the City is that house builders who thought they'd done the deed in their 1991 and 1992 results may find themselves having to make further write-downs next year. The exceptions are those builders who took the prudent, conservative and, sadly, realistic course of writing down land banks fully over a number of years - like Wilson Bowden. Which is why the love affair looks set to continue.
