10Sep92 UK: MOWLEM MINING RECEIVES NEW AVELING BARFORD ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCKS.

Mowlem Mining received three custom-made Aveling Barford articulated dump trucks (ADTs) to take double the usual loads. The 25 tonne ADTs have been fitted with 28 cu m bodies instead of the usual 14 cu m body. As coal is a fraction of the density of ordinary muckshift material the machines can take the extra volume. The design brief also called for them to be easily discharged and 'aesthetically pleasing'.The machines are loaded by hydraulic excavators and then climb to the disposal site at the top of a steep 1.6km haul road.Mowlem Mining, a division of John Mowlem Construction, operates the site near Haltwhistle, Northumberland, for British Coal. Some 2 million tonnes of coal will be won over the next nine years.
