12May94 UK: LAING TEAM GOES WITH THE TIDAL FLOW - SECOND SEVERN CROSSING.

The 13 m tidal range in the Severn Estuary, site of the £300 million second Severn crossing, is the second highest in the world. But joint venture Laing/GTM has overcome daily access problems and is progressing to schedule with Britain's biggest privately-financed design and build project. More than half of all 37 foundation caissons supporting the main structure are now in place. The 456 m twin cable-stayed bridge spans the main navigation channel of the estuary, and is approached by pre-cast concrete viaducts, erected using the balance cantilever method. The first section of the pre-fabricated steel bridge deck should be laid by the end of June. The completion date is scheduled for April 1996.
