14Oct93 UK: HEWDEN PROFITS UP AMID REVIVAL DOUBT.

Britain's largest independent plant hirer, Hewden Stuart, reported a 35 per cent rise in pre-tax profits last week - but no marked improvement in volumes or hire rates.Chairman Sir Matthew Goodwin said the group's plant hire division reported 'no lessening in the severity of competition and little sign of a recovery in rates'.The hire rate for an air compressor had fallen from £650 to £400 over the past year.But the Glasgow company had seen an improvement in trading conditions ...
