17Feb94 UK: LAING'S SOCCER PLAN CALLED IN - PORTSMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB.

Laing's planning application to build Portsmouth Football Club's £40 million stadium has been called in by environment secretary John Gummer with a date for a public inquiry set for May 4.The scheme has made stormy progress throughout the planning process to date. Not only does it represent a change to the regional development plan, but the land earmarked for the ground is next to Langstone Harbour which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.Another sticking point has been the 14,000 sq m of space which would be built as part of the enabling development for the 22,500-seater stadium.
