17Feb94 UK: SMITHFIELD TRAGEDY - SCAFFOLDER FELL 10 M TO HIS DEATH JUST TWO WEEKS BEFORE HE WAS DUE TO MARRY.

A scaffolder fell 10 m to his death just two weeks before he was due to marry.Stuart Whybrow was fixing a bowed pole at the Smithfield Market redevelopment last May when the accident happened.Security guard Paul Salmon told an inquest at City of London Coroner's Court: 'I heard a noise and saw a scaffolder falling through the boards.'He swung his left hand to hold on to a pole and his helmet flew off as he fell on to the pavement.'Mr Whybrow, who was working for subcontractor Scaffolding Great Britain at the Taylor Woodrow site, was airlifted to St Bartholomew's Hospital but later died.Coroner Dr Douglas Chambers has referred the accident to the National Association of Scaffolding Contractors 'to bring to their attention the dangers of this type of scaffolding'.The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
