23Aug91 UK: NATIONAL TRUST EXPECTS TO TAKE COURT ACTION AGAINST THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR FIRE AT UPPARK HOUSE.

'Our interest is in ensuring that none of our own money goes into this project.'Julian Prideaux, chief agent for the National Trust, is adamant that the huge amount of money - so far £4.5 million and destined to be much more - needed to restore the house [Uppark House - West Sussex] will not come from NT.'The trust's insurers (Sun Alliance) have subrogated all our rights and they are responsible for the recovery action,' he said. 'We expect to be in court sometime, but we don't know when. Litigation is going to flow from this event.'Writs have been issued against Haden Young - the contractor working on the site when the fire began - by both the National Trust and the family whose home Uppark is.Further actions are thought to be possible against the contractor which erected the temporary roof which crashed to the ground during last year's storms. So there is plenty to be resolved at Uppark yet.
