Construction union UCATT must borrow another £800,000 from bankers to survive. That is the verdict of top accountant KPMG Peat Marwick in a secret report on the financially crippled union whose overdraft could rise to £2.4 million. The document states: 'The bank is being asked to significantly increase its exposure to potential loss.'Viewed from a purely commercial perspective there is a very strong argument for the bank declining to provide any additional facility over and above that currently available.'If such a decision were taken the ability of the union to continue in its current form is very doubtful.'UCATT is also planning to increase weekly contributions from building workers by up to 8 per cent next year. And the accountants are advising that bonus payments should be dished out to officials who bring in recruits.Membership has sunk to below 135,000.
