Council estate renewal projects across London face collapse because the Government has miscalculated the cost of work already in progress. The London Housing Unit said this week that the Department of the Environment had told it that London councils will be allowed £74 million under the estate action programme for next year. But projects already under way are expected to cost between £70 million and £85 million next year, leaving almost nothing for new work, according to the LHU.
