30Aug91 USA: INTERBETON INC LINES UP £135M BOSTON TUNNEL DEAL WITH MORRISON KNUDSON AND JF WHITE.

Interbeton Inc, the American arm of the Dutch contractor, is set for a US$227 million (£135 million) contract in joint venture with two other firms for the construction of an immersed tube road tunnel in Boston, Massachusetts.The Massachusetts Department of Public Work will confirm the contract in the next few weeks once the tender has been assessed and its level of minority business and women's business participation has passed the strict rules demanded by the client.The contract will be shared with Morrison Knudsen, which is working with Laing in Britain on the Glaxo project in Stevenage, and J F White Contracting, from Newton, just outside Boston.Work involves the construction of a 1 km steel segmental immersed tube containing a dual two-lane carriageway linking Logan international airport and south Boston.The scheme is the first major contract award on Boston's $5,000 million (£3,000 million) Central Artery and Third Harbour Tunnel project.The binocular shaped tube will have some mechanical and electrical equipment installed, but the major M and E installation, including lighting and fire safety equipment, will be fitted under a separate contract.Construction is expected to start by the end of this year for completion in 1994.
