£500k to Piper

The former finance director of Atkins, Ric Piper, has been paid £500,000 in compensation by media giant Trinity Mirror after it decided to drop him as its group finance director just 24 hours before he was due to join. The settlement was made hours before Mr Piper's claim for damages was due to be heard in the High Court. Mr Piper was due to join Trinity Mirror on October 2 but was 'dehired' after Atkins issued a trading statement which saw its shares fall 73 per cent.
