Abbey earnings slip

A RISE in UK sales failed to prevent interim earnings slipping back at Anglo-Irish house builder Abbey.

Abbey sold 231 homes in the UK in the six months to October 2006 - up from 194 a year ago - but operating profits at its house building division fell £41,000 to just under £13.8 m illion.

Overall house building workload at Abbey, which raised Irish house sales to 136 units from 108 a year ago, was static at £59 million in the half-year.

Abbey's UK plant hire division raised pretax profits £198,000 to £829,000 as turnover firmed £237,000 to £7.3 m illion.
