Aldershot, Hampshire MoD contract in Kier's sights

KIER is tipped to bag a £40 million design-and-build deal to redevelop Mons Barracks in Aldershot for the Ministry of Defence.

According to insiders, Kier's bid is favoured ahead of rival submissions from Carillion, Shepherd and Sir Robert McAlpine.

However, an MoD source insisted: 'An official decision is not due for another month.'

Project manager Allott & Lomax also refused to be drawn on the status of the four bids, which were submitted on January 18.

Kier, which declined to comment, was not included on the original four- strong short list.

The firm was drafted in as a last-minute replacement for Bryant, which pulled out citing a shortage of bricklayers.

Documentation for the job was issued on October 15 and was due back before Christmas, until an appeal from the bidders prompted the client to extend the deadline.

A start on site is mooted for early summer with demolition startingto first clear the site of minor buildings. The entire scheme must be completed by next autumn.

Work features single living accommodation for junior ranks, a mess apiece for junior and senior ranks, a church room, catering unit for civilian staff and mechanical transport accommodation.
