Amec joint venture tipped for orbital pole

CONTRACTS MANCHESTER

AN AMEC/Alfred McAlpine team has been tipped for a major motorway widening contract on the outskirts of Manchester.

This week the Highways Agency will choose from three teams for its £80 million deal to widen the M60 Manchester orbital motorway in the south-west of the city between junctions 5 and 8.

Costain and Nuttall/Norwest Holst are also in contention but project sources said this week the Amec/Alfred McAlpine team had its nose in front.

The scheme is intended to improve safety by removing a bottleneck, expanding the road to fourlane dual carriageway between junctions 6 and 8 and to three-lane dual carriageway for the rest.
