Army to build new camps for troops serving in Iraq

NEW CAMPS may have to be built for British troops in Iraq following the handover of power to the interim Iraqi government.

The British currently have bases in a number of Iraqi buildings, one of which is one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces.

Captain Donald Francis, based with the British troops in Iraq, said: 'It is definitely the intention to move out of any Iraqi buildings. It is well within the bounds of possibility that troops will have to leave those buildings for purpose-made military camps.'

It is unclear whether the new facilities will be put out to tender or built under existing agreements with contractors.
