Asbestos left on Amec site

THE HEALTH and Safety Executive has launched a probe into a central London site after claims that a pile of deadly blue asbestos was left unattended for a month.

Workers on the Victoria House project in Covent Garden could have been exposed to the material while working on the refurbishment job where Amec is main contractor.

An HSE source said: 'We have been notified of the removal of asbestos on this site.

A complaint has been lodged with regard to inadvertent exposure to asbestos and an initial investigation has started.'

A site source said: 'The asbestos had just been left on site for at least a month.'

An Amec spokesman said: 'As soon as the asbestos was discovered the area was sealed. It was confined to a limited area with access restricted to a very small number of people.'
