Axed firm back on Wembley job

Cleveland's sister firm working on stadium seven months after Multiplex booted it off

WEMBLEY steelwork contractor Hollandia has been forced to turn to the firm it replaced for help with work on a key part of the stadium's roof.

The Dutch specialist has approached Dorman Long Technology to help it sort out an engineering problem on a 100 m long roof truss, known as T7.

Dorman is the sister company of Cleveland Bridge, the original Wembley steelwork contractor, which was booted off the job by main contractor Multiplex last summer.

Dorman carries out all of Cleveland's engineering and was responsible for work on the stadium's iconic arch as well as supervising the lift last June. It was also behind the detailed erection engineering for 26,000 tonnes of structural steel at the north London site.

Dorman was thrown off the job with Cleveland when the latter fell out with Multiplex.The pair are now suing each other in the High Court for a total of £40 million.

But Hollandia has brought back Dorman to sort out some design problems on the roof truss. One source said: 'The engineer, Mott Stadium Consortium, made some changes to the truss which caught Hollandia by surprise and Dorman has had a couple of guys helping to redesign the connections and erection methods to suit the changes made by MSC.'

The Dorman staff have been working with Hollandia at its base near Rotterdam as well as out of the offices the firm shares with Cleveland Bridge in Darlington.

The source added: 'The Dorman presence is very small but given the level of bitterness between Multiplex and Cleveland Bridge and the fact Multiplex made it clear it would not work with Cleveland Bridge again.

I'm surprised they're there at all.Whether it will lead to further work, I don't know.There can't be too much engineering left.'

Multiplex declined to comment but just before Christmas Multiplex UK chairman Noel Henderson launched a scathing attack on Cleveland Bridge's senior management - yet praised the performance of its engineers.

He said Hollandia was outperforming Cleveland Bridge with the amount of steel it was lifting, which was double the best achieved by Cleveland.
