Balfour bags sixth ECI roads deal

Balfour Beatty has won a £171 million ECI contract to widen the A421 for 13km between the M1 motorway and Bedford from a single to a dual carriageway.
The contractor beat rivals Morgan Est/Vinci, Costain and Laing O'Rourke to win its sixth ECI deal for the Highways Agency. The road will run from the A421 at Kempston to the A428 at Great Denham.

The Highways Agency is planning to upgrade the link between Bedford and junction 13 on the M1 and completely restructuring the interchange. Construction is due to start in 2008 with the new road due to open in 2010.

Balfour Beatty's other ECI deals are the £34 million A1(M) Bramham to Wetherby upgrading, the £120 million A3 Hindhead improvement, the £223 million A303 scheme adjacent to Stonehenge, the £171 million A46 Newark to Widmerpool improvement and the £241 M1 Junction 6a to 10 widening scheme between Hemel Hempstead and Luton in joint venture with Skanska.
