Firms shortlisted for 180 million upgrade of sewage treatment works in readiness for Thames Tideway project
A three-way battle is emerging for the 180 million job to revamp Beckton sewage treatment works in east London.
Balfour Beatty, Laing O’Rourke and a Black & Veatch/Costain joint venture have been shortlisted for the contract, which will prepare the plant for Thames Water’s 2.2 billion flagship Thames Tideway project.
Most of the work will focus on increasing the treatment capacity of the sewage works, which currently processes sewage from 3.4 million
Londoners and discharges it into the tidal reaches of the River Thames.
The package includes a new final effluent tunnel, new aeration lanes, new final settlement tanks and infrastructure provision for the new plant area.
The project is expected to start in spring 2009 and will take four-and-a-half years to complete.
Beckton is one of three sewage treatment works due to be upgraded ahead of the Thames Tideway project.
Crossness in south-east London and Mogden, near Richmond in the south-west of the city, will be undergoing a 250 million upgrade that includes new inlet works, aeration blowers and expansion of the existing sludge treatment facilities.
Laing O’Rourke, Balfour Beatty and Costain are also in the running for this work, which has been divided into two lots - the first, worth 70 million, focuses on Mogden.
The second lot, worth 180 million, involves extensive work to the Crossness sewage treatment facility in Abbey Wood, which covers a catchment area of 240 sq km including Southwark and Lewisham.
The work on Crossness and Mogden is expected to take four years to complete.
Thames Water, chaired by former Amec and Balfour Beatty chief executive Sir Peter Mason, is gearing up to begin the first phase of the Thames Tideway project, which involves the 375 million construction of a 6.8 km spur tunnel in east London, called the Lea Tunnel.
Four bidders, including a Morgan Est/Vinci JV and a Murphy/Hochtief JV, are vying for the job.
The project is due to be awarded in March 2009. Construction will begin immediately and is due to finish in 2014.
