Battle hots up for £60m college deals


THE RACE is on for two education contracts in the north and Scotland with a combined value of nearly £60 million.

HBG, Balfour Beatty, Tolent, Sir Robert McAlpine and Shepherd are compiling tenders for a £36 million deal to relocate Gateshead College to the Baltic business quarter development at Gateshead Quay.

The 20,000 sq m building was designed by the Red Box Design Group.Bids go back next week with a decision likely a month later.Work will start by the end of the year.

North of the border, HBG, Sir Robert McAlpine and Balfour Beatty, along with Laing O'Rourke, are about to price the £20 million Clydebank College at the £250 million Queen's Quay development in Glasgow.

European funding of £5.6 million will go into the facility, which will be built by 2007.
