BALFOUR Beatty has boosted its presence in the American rail market with the acquisition of two US trackwork companies for £31 million.
Marta Track and Metroplex had an aggregate turnover of £26 million last year generating operating profits of nearly £4 million. The pair have a current order book of £100 million.
Projects that the two are currently working on include rapid transit schemes in Dallas and San Francisco while Metroplex is building a light rail system in southern New Jersey.
Balfour Beatty chief executive Mike Welton said: 'These acquisitions give us an immediate and significant presence in the US rail market which has excellent growth potential.'
The US market has a current project expenditure of £6 billion a year and a maintenance budget of £4 billion a year.
Balfour Beatty is nearing the end of a £300 million contract to electrify the route of Amtrak's north-east corridor between Boston and New Haven.
