BENSON is closing its loss-making Midlands operation with the loss of 28 jobs. The contractor has also shelved plans to launch a north of England division in Leeds.
The move comes as Benson announced the appointment of former Montpellier boss Paul Sellars as its new chief executive. He replaces former chief executive Alistair Sloan, who left the firm last week.
Benson chairman George Kynoch said: 'This has been an extremely tough decision to take but in recent months our Benson Midlands business has suffered a number of setbacks, including a significant shortfall on certain contracts.
'We intend to give our clients support and advice to assist them in finding alternative construction companies to complete works currently in progress.
'The Midlands is an extremely competitive marketplace for the construction industry. Our team has worked hard to try and salvage the situation but sadly we have been left with no alternative but to close the operation.'
