Blair and Brown seek Africa support from G8

Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown will today seek promises of support for their plans to help Africa as they host the finance ministers of the G8 group of rich industrialised nations.

Mr Blair has put assistance for Africa at the top of the London agenda for Britain's presidency of the G8 this year, and gained a measure of support from US President George Bush during his visit to Washington earlier this week.

Mr Bush agreed to put the US's weight behind a proposal to cancel the multi-lateral debts owed by the 25 poorest countries to the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and African Development Bank.
