BLOW HOLES: A lightweight aggregate from Maxit proved an ideal solut ion recently to a problem caused by voids up to 10 m deep found in a Victorian railway viaduct under renovation on the West Coast Main Line. Contractor Skanska UK found the hollows at the last minute in the 12 m-high brickwork abutments. The LWA, with a 5 kN/m unit weight, could be blown through tubes from the firm's specialised delivery lorry to the top so the holes could be filled without imposing significant loads.
