Blue Circle cuts workforce

CEMENT giant Blue Circle is axing 150 staff from its Eastgate factory at Weardale, County Durham.

The company, part of the Lafarge Group, announced that the plant would close in an effort to cut surplus stock following investment in cement works in the Midlands and Scotland.

The factory produces 600,000 tonnes a year and runs at a profit.

But the firm says the plant is no longer economical and will shift production to Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Scotland.

Blue Circle managing director Richard Olsen said: 'The closure decision has been taken following a review of our capacity and future market requirements.'
