Bogus self-employment can easily be eradicated

LETTERS

Sir, The question of bogus self-employment seems to be raised weekly in Construction News.

But there is a simple solution to all the problems defining an individual's tax status. Why doesn't the Government scrap all bogus self-employment, namely, composite companies, offshore accounts and the like, and make everyone go PAYE? It would be much easier for everyone.

The rates should stay the same - definitely not decrease - with full holiday pay, plus bank holidays.

Why can't the construction industry operate like other industries where workers are treated with a bit more dignity and respect, instead of the hire-and-fire set-up that is operating at the moment?

I have worked in the construction industry for over 20 years and rarely worked on a PAYE basis, which I would love to do.

The sooner this bogus self-employment is done away with, the better.
