Bourne and Billington target major projects

Steelworks companies Bourne and Billington will focus on projects over £8 million as a joint venture, which was officially launched last night.

BS2, bringing together 125 years of experience in the Bourne Group and Billington Structures, will have a particular focus on multi-million pound high-rise schemes, along with other major projects.

Billington managing director Steve Fareham told CN that the grim point of the economic cycle seemed the right time to make a move – and to better position the firms to challenge the other leading steel companies.

He said:  “We are both major players but the perception was that Bourne and Billington were not being perceived by the industry as contenders for jobs in excess of £8m; we seemed to hit a glass ceiling, even with customers that had been with us for a long time.

“We can see somewhere down the line – 2012 onwards – that we can present ourselves as an alternative.”

Mr Fareham said the firms complement each other, both in terms of skills and their geography . BS2 will be headed up by non executive chairman Tom Goldberg.
