Brookfield Multiplex has signed up ElecoPrecast to provide student accommodation for Reading University’s redevelopment in a deal worth £22m.
ElecoPrecast, which manufactures and constructs precast concrete products, will deliver five four-storey blocks that will house 457 rooms in cluster flats and townhouses at the Bridges Hall of residence.
It is the third and final stage of the university’s £40m programme of refurbishment, new build and extension work which began in the summer.
Four of the five blocks will be made using precast, made to measure concrete rooms that are fabricated offsite and constructed onsite. The rooms are fitted using hidden joints and connected together to conform to building regulations.
As windows are already in place while the blocks are put together on-site internal decoration can start much quicker, reducing overall building time.
The work is due to start in March and construction of the blocks is expected to take about six months.
