Brown's budget bid for election initiative

Labour MPs will today look to Gordon Brown to inject new life into the party's pre-election campaigning as the Chancellor delivers what may be his final Budget.
In what is likely to be the Government's last big setpiece announcement before the general election, widely expected on May 5, Mr Brown will seek to seize the political initiative.

Despite Treasury attempts to play down suggestions of the pre-election give-away, the Chancellor is expected to announce help for first-time home buyers by raising the stamp duty threshold from £60,000 to £100,000.
