Building starts on 2012 Olympic village

Piling work began on the 2012 Olympic Games athletes village today after the Olympic Delivery Authority provided early funding to get the job under way.

The Olympic Village is set to be managed by developer Lend Lease but it has yet to agree its deal for the works, that will see 3,500 homes built on the site, amid claims that it is struggling to make the budget stack up.

The ODA said today that it was confident that it would shortly sign an interim deal with the developer but that it was funding these early works so that they could be get underway ahead of this agreement.

Work on the substructure for the Olympic village blocks will start in the summer.

It is set to be the last major Olympic building project to be completed, targeting an early 2012 finish.
