Bypass race nears its end

CONTRACTS DEVON

THE LONG-delayed Barnstaple Western Bypass scheme is down to just two firms.

Nuttall and Balfour Beatty are preparing to slog it out for the £40 million scheme, for Devon County Council, at the expense of failed bids from Hochtief and Costain.

The winner will lay a 2.7 km road and 300 m long bridge to alleviate congestion in the town. The final pair will find out later this month which has won.

The award has been held up by almost a year.
