Call to scrap university tuition fees

Ministers were facing fresh calls today to scrap tuition fees amid a decline in university applications.
The National Union of Students demanded the abolition of the £3,000 a year top-up fees starting next year.

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service released statistics which showed 59,881 people have so far applied for undergraduate courses starting in 2006.
