Carillion uses gentle blast

CARILLION Transport has used a rail mounted vacuum to reballast switch and crossing areas without damaging surrounding cables and pipes.

The Swedish-built Railvac machine has been used in Scandinavia and the US but not in the UK.

Carillion removed 150 m of wet clay and ballast to a minimum depth of 300 mm, without requiring cable disconnection, in a weekend.

The firm said the Railvac could be used in such areas as track lowering and drainage installation.

The firm is working with Swedish and German partners to develop a British version.
