Cartel busters on target

IT LOOKS like the competition police are backing up their threats to get tough after a string of specialist recruitment companies landed in trouble with the Office of Fair Trading.

The raid is the latest in a series of OFT operations which have focused on major contractors, roofing subbies and the glazing sector in the past few months alone.

The message is clear: cartel busters have the resources to carry out sophisticated investigations and construction is a prime target.

The days of a cosy chat with a few competitors to fix bid prices for clients are coming to an end.

The risks are becoming too great thanks to the combination of whopping fines and an effective police force.

Competition is vital to modern construction and the OFT's campaign can only be a good thing for the long-term health of the industry.
