Channel contractors singled out for credit

CONTRACTORS on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link have been praised by spending watchdogs for keeping to budget and setting industry-leading safety standards.

The construction companies are the only ones to get any credit in a National Audit Office report into the rail route.

Public Accounts Committee chairman Edward Leigh asked whether the project should ever have been started and attacked train operator Eurostar's passenger forecasts as 'preposterously over-optimistic' He said: 'This is a sorry tale of something that started off in the expectation that all the risks would be borne by the private sector and has ended up where they are all backed financially by the Government.'
